I was so worried about this activity. I used to dread craft projects because I hate the mess and always disliked being the one that ended up doing all the work. The kids love them, but they're usually so much work. Andrew and Izzy had their heart set on this tradition so it was time to just get it over with. We set some rules: they were in charge of drawing their own faces so that mommy or daddy could carve it and they were in charge of all the scooping. They also helped separate the pumpkin seeds so I could cook a few batches which turned out very yummy by the way. I tried some cinnamon sugar ones which were like candy. Well the night turned out great. Andrew and Izzy did so much on their own. They didn't complain or whine for help. It was so much fun that I'm looking forward to next year!
Alex was our neat freak. She thought it looked cool but said, "Yucky" anytime I tried to get her to help scooping.
Us below our pumpkins. Andrew and Izzy did a great job on those faces didn't they.
Calvin thought the standing by the wall to pose was fun. It's so cute to hear him say Cheese. He can be crying, but once that camera is ready to go, the tears stop and you hear this cute "Cheese."
Have you ever thought about all that pumpkin junk that goes in the trash? This year I wanted to see what I could do with it. All of the eyes, noses and mouths, we cooked in the oven (searched sites to find out the best way to cook it). We peeled off the skin and ate some with butter and brown suger (tasted like any other squash.) and 1 cup of it went into a pumpkin cream pie. The pie itself was pretty good, but the coolest part was that it was homemade pumpkin. I can't wait til the day we can have our own garden and figure out all this extra cooking stuff. Someday.
