Has anyone else gotten one of those Halloween costume catalogs in the mail? My kids have claimed ours spending hours looking through it. They've been putting stickers on their favorite costumes and also deciding who can be what for Halloween. Since they can read, they come up saying, "Mom, you should be a sexy mummy for Halloween." Hmmmm ... who would've thought I needed to censor a costume catalog?
All kids need are a good catalog and their imagination to have fun. I bet if we actually bought any of these costumes, the excitement would wear off sooner than the dreaming of the costumes. Izzy found a page w/ pet costumes and got the bright idea that she wanted costumes for her stuffed animals so they can put on a Halloween show. I told her if she wants to save up her money, she can spend the $12 per costume or we can sew some ourselves. I guess the idea of sewing w/ mommy sounded like tons of fun because every single day for the past week she's been asking if we can "do a project." Today I guess I was feeling a bit on the crazy side and decided it was time to make good on this promise. Now, I have to warn you. I took a sewing class in college and got a C. I guess you could say I don't sew good.=) Did I also mention I get grumpy doing crafts with kids? There's always too many kids that want to do stuff and not enough of me to go around. Like I said, I must've been feeling crazy when I decided to do a sewing project.
Izzy grabbed the few stuffed animals she wanted costumes for and told me she wanted a dress and a hat for the princess. I made her start out easy by suggesting a cape. (That's what's on the dog if you can't tell.=) Then we got ambitious w/ the hat. Holy cow that was tricky. There's probably an easier way, but I pulled out a piece of construction paper and rolled it up to be a cone, cut the bottom so it was straight and taped it together. Then I wrapped some fabric (Izzy chose the fabric) around and took a while to figure out how I was supposed to sew it together. Thank goodness Glen's done at least some sewing or we would've been there forever. Then I had to tear the construction paper out because I'd sewed it to the fabric and then turned the fabric right side out. Then rolled another piece of construction paper to put inside to help the hat keep its shape. That's when I found the handy dandy stapler does the trick almost as well as sewing. I love that these kids don't care how imperfect these projects are. Except for the crankiness that hit me when it was time to clean-up, it was a fun activity and Izzy is absolutely thrilled w/ her new costumes.

Those are the most adorable pet costumes I've ever seen! Go, MOM, go! You really are a great example to all of us who read your blog. And I miss you, too, Jamie!
