Babysitting $$

O.k. I really need to know.  What do you pay for babysitting?  Maybe I'm a cheapskate.  Yes my kids are important to me and so are dates with my spouse or just Jamie time.  But is minimum wage+ REALLY the going rate?  When I was babysitting (yes it's been a few years), I was paid $2/hr. no matter how many kids I was watching.  Has inflation really gone up that much?

Jamie,
Katie here--I'm probably a cheapskate, too, but I pay $1 per hour per kid + bonus if they have to put them to bed. I always round up the time, and I try to at least pay 5 bucks. I feel your pain, though. You don't want to be the one no one wants to babysit for cause you pay cruddy, but you don't want to break the bank, either. Good luck.

hear hear!! I love this question and I too would like an answer. (would you mind if I post a similar post?). we actually have NEVER paid anyone besides family to babysit. and even then we rarely pay. they just do it for free or VERY low.

I have some young women who are used to getting like $9 an hr!!!!! that's insane to me, but we do have some richy families in our ward....

I dunno, I think $2 (or even $1/hr if you've got more than 3 kids) is plenty.

...check my blog later, I'll post this too, to get a lot of response!

Jessica,
I put a link to the blog template page. I'd found it on someone else's site and LOVE IT!!! I kept trying to play around with the photobucket and everything else, but this was much easier.

We don't use it all that often, but when we do we pay $5 an hour or so. I don't know what the going rate is though either so I am interested in the responses too. Thanks for the blog link!

What's minimum wage now a days anyways?? I totally remember getting $2 an hour and I slaved over kids, dishes, and messes and cleaned them all up before parents came home too!!

I think it depends on the age of the babysitter, their experience, and what you expect from them- just make sure kids watch tv and don't kill eachother or clean up around house and put kids to bed.

I paid $5 an hour to someone with experience who did daycare/ babysitting in their home which I would be willing to pay a sitter if they seriously worked around my house and took great care of my kiddo!

Another option is trade off date nights/ babysitting with another close family.

Hey Jamie,

I am so excited because I finally got with the times and created a page for our family. it is in its infancy right now but I will expand soon. about the babysitting thing I pay 20 bucks for the night regardless of the time. I feel that is sufficient. Especially if the kids are sleeping half of the time.

I am very happy to see your blog and to able to keep up with each other once again. Very cute family. To answer this question, here in NYC I pay $5 an hour for just one kid and give them $10 for cab money to get home. I also always round up. We usually try to opt for babysitting swaps just to be able to afford going out since a movie ticket is almost $12 here.
