Water witching?

Glen's parents went with their daughter to visit her husband's family in the Philippines. One of the families they visited owns 5 acres of land (I hope I'm getting this story right) but they couldn't use it because they couldn't get any water. So Lynda (the aforementioned daughter, Glen's sister) asked her dad to see if he could find water while they were visiting. He packed for the trip making sure to search out a good willow tree to break off a perfect dowsing stick to bring in his bag. The first day they were there, dad went water-witching, found water that day and they were able to get a well dug that weekend. This land that had been unusable for the past 10 years is now usable. All because of a willow stick and an amazing gift to be able to water-witch?

I'd never seen someone water witching before. I'm not sure I'd even heard of it before I met my husband. So how does it work? The water-witcher holds a dowsing rod of choice (Glen's dad does best with a forked willow stick.) You hold it a certain way and walk slowly across the ground until the stick starts to pull down towards the ground. No one's really sure why it happens and why only certain people can do it. But I can now testify that it's real. Glen's dad took us on a walk to the well on their land to show us water-witching. Each of the kids got to hold the stick with grandpa to feel the amazing tug it pulled when it was above water. It was really cool to watch but even cooler to be on the other side of that stick.

We had to get our hand grip right. Now that was tricky. My wrist didn't want to cooperate.=)
Holy cow that stick is pulling down towards the ground. The tug on that thing was amazing. Just watching you may have thought it could still be fake. But the pull of that thing ... Crazy!
I tried it on my own, but don't think I have the gift. Glen doesn't have it either but I think a few of his siblings do.
After this experiment, Glen and I watched Coraline (a Tim Burton type film--not a movie for kids. I was even a bit freaked out by it.) She was water-witching at the beginning of the movie and I understood what she was doing. You learn something new everyday.

This is so interesting! I've never heard of this before. Thanks for teaching me something new today.

It's true. Brian and his brothers did this as well when they were putting in their dad's sprinkling system. I made fun of them, but when they dug, there was the water pipe right in that spot!
