When we go cherry picking, we mean business. The kids haven't been to an orchard for picking fruit since ... well I'm not sure when. They don't remember ever either. These cherries were so yummy that we decided to go cherry picking.
Here are some of the fruits of our labors. I almost can't look because they make my mouth water.
Picking perfect cherries is a perfect reason for climbing.
Everyone got into it,
even Calvin.
And Grandma and Grandpa were there.
We had so much fun that we just kept picking away until we ended up with 99 lbs. of cherries. A little more ambitious than planned, but we can handle it.=)
I don't think we can eat that many,
no matter how yummy or how hard we try.
When the kids got done picking, they just explored. Calvin is a very good stick finder. Nothing is more fun than a good stick.
We ended up canning 61 quarts of bing cherries and 10 quarts of pie cherries. That my friends is a whole lot of cherries.
Andrew and Izzy even helped with the canning job although they informed me that it wasn't as much fun as picking. I agree. Picking is just too much fun.
We've been able to go huckleberry picking (unfortunately not able to can anywhere near as many as 61 quarts. That huckleberry picking is a whole lot more work, but they're sure yummy.) in the mountains a few times. We went to another orchard closer to Spokane called Green Bluff and picked raspberries along with some kale and carrots. Kale was a new experience. I think I like the baby leaves better fresh. Cooked wasn't my favorite. We're hoping to go get some peaches in the next week or so but I still need to find which box my own canning supplies. We've been running low on our fruit supply for some time now and we've been desperately missing applesauce. Still plenty of canning to do this summer. Oh and a friend in the ward has an amazing garden in her backyard and offered green beans for the taking. We've been able to freeze a few bags of those. Couldn't believe how yummy a can of spam fried up and added to some fresh boiled green beans. (Don't forget the butter and salt.) Anyways, here's to canning.

Wow that's a lot of cherries! Yum! Yeah for canning!
You amaze me! I don't think I even have that many jars total...let alone just for cherries! 4 kids and one on the way! That's a lot of work. Good for you.
That is lots of delicious fruit! Looks like you guys have been having fun. Hope you are feeling good again, Jamie. P.S. I love the link you've added to "Confessions of a fat dietitian." Made me laugh!
99 lbs! Oh my gosh that's a lot. Yeah, did you even know you had that many canning jars?
