Thurs. night at the pier

K, on to blogging our beach vacation.=)  After classes on Thurs. (Glen still has Fridays off til next semester), we were already packed and headed on our way.  We got to the hotel by dinnertime and the Drury Inn has dinner for their guests.  It wasn't the greatest, but the chicken strips and nachos were really good and it was nice to not have to go out and find someplace to eat.  Then we drove over to the Naval Base to check out the beaches to see if it would be worth coming back on Friday.  No real beaches, but we did find water with a long pier.  We got out and got our feet wet and smelled fish in the air.  The mosquitoes were absolutely awful, but we loved the water.
Calvin was having a tough time deciding if it was o.k. or not.

After a little splashing and the kids getting a little too close to the point of no return with getting their clothes wet, we decided to check out the pier and see how far it went.  That's where we found the fishers.  They were so friendly in showing us their catches.  We got to feel the slimy, smoothness of some trout.  We got to see them trying to breathe out of water.  Now is that a cool science lesson or what.  The further down the pier we got, the bigger the fish were.  We were in such awe at these huge catfish.  Different fishers pointed out different things swimming in the water.  I'd never seen a trumpetfish before.  They are these long, skiny fish and don't look like much for eating.  We were in such awe at everything we saw that we didn't get any pictures except for this pelican.  There it was right next to us.  He was standing so still that at first we though it was a statue.  But nope, real pelican waiting for some fish.
Some fishers said they saw a huge turtle and were bummed we were down the pier so they couldn't show the kids.  They also said that if we listened, we could hear the dolphins blowing water out.  And if we looked carefully, we probably could've seen their shadows.  We tried, but no luck.  But isn't that so cool.  I want to live near the ocean.
