Bye bye baby

We finally said goodbye to an old family treasure. This baby has been in the Gilson family since before I became a Gilson so for me it was like saying goodbye to a family member.  This '88 Subaru Justy, 3 cylinder car was given to us by Glen's parents when we got married. It has been a huge blessing in our lives.  Time to reminisce.

This little piece of metal has been all over the place. We drove away from the temple for the first time as a married couple in this cute little car. It started out with us in Utah and was my transportation for work. It delivered many pizzas with me and got many fun comments. People are still shocked that it has 4 wheel drive.=) We made many trips up to Wyoming to see my family those first few years and even made it up to Washington state a few times (14 hr. drive).   The poor little thing would shake like crazy when you pushed it past 65mph, but it always got us to our destination in one piece.  It didn't like going over the mountains very much. We had a cop driving alongside us once asking if we needed assistance. We were putting along at 35 mph, patting the dashboard, "You can do it," afraid that if we stopped we wouldn't make it through the snow over the mountain. "We're fine," we said, laughing and a bit anxious at the same time. It also made that special trip to the hospital after my water broke with Andrew.   I still can't believe that we were so deep in conversation (hadn't started contractions yet) that we'd missed our turn. It brought our Andrew home from the hospital and was our family car for the first 6 or so mths. of his life. Sometime after that, we upgraded to a 2 car family (if I remember correctly, we wanted something with air conditioning), so it became Glen's transportation while I had the family car. When we moved to Illinois, we trekked across the country with our 2 cars communicating with our walkie talkies.  We lost communication after going through a toll road and didn't have cell phones (still haven't upgraded to that world yet, but someday.)  I was so nervous those 10 mins. that we'd lost each other and we didn't have a backup plan as to how to get back in touch if we got lost.  But we made it.  Our friends called this car the .... Then it came with us back across the country to Las Vegas and has been Glen's mile drive to work. Here it's been known as "the roller skate."  When we found out we were moving to San Antonio, we knew it was probably time to let it rest from the cross country road trips. It'll be nice to have Glen in the minivan traveling with us this move, but it's still sad to say goodbye.  Here's to you ... we never even named it.=(
